The Mystery of The Maze
The Maze Runner by James Dash is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. The story starts out the main character Thomas, showing up to new land without any of his memories. He doesn’t remember who he is, or how he got to this place, but the boys that surround him say this happens once a month; a new boy arrives to what they call The Glade. The boys are essentially prisoners, and have built a working society in this new place. Each month they get supplies sent from whomever must have put them all there. On the outskirts of The Glade, are entrances to The Maze. It’s their hope that by solving the maze, they will be able to escape, so each day runners go out into the maze to map the different paths. The maze is filled with monsters, and the walls change each night. Although the boys have been in The Glade for years, once Thomas arrives things start to change. They have to figure out the maze quickly, because this is all a test, and if you fail you die.
This story reminded me a lot of The Hunger Games because children are put in a different environment and essentially being sacrificed. The Hunger Games storyline is mostly transparent. As a reader, we know that reaping happens every year, and we know why. The Maze Runner has a very mysterious, and somewhat supernatural feel. I never knew what was going on or what would happen next. It kept me on my toes and trying to put all the puzzle pieces together. I also feel like in some future world The Hunger Games could happen, but I highly doubt that The Maze Runner would ever be reality.
I would absolutely recommend this book, and the whole series to others. This book would be perfect for someone who enjoys Science Fiction, like The Hunger Games, City of Embers, and Divergent. It will keep you at the edge of your seat the whole time! On top of it being an amazing and thrilling book, it’s also a movie! I personally enjoy reading a book and then watching the movie to see all of the differences. Make sure you pay attention to all the details as you read, because the movie changed quite a bit. I hope you’ll enjoy The Maze Runner and the rest of the series as much as I did!
